How Can Positive Thinking Add Years to Your Life ?

Can changing the way we think on a daily basis actually add years to our life? Well according to this study by the Mayo Clinic in Florida it definitely can!


A 30 year study of 447 people at the Mayo Clinic in Florida found that optimists had around a 50% lower risk of early death than pessimists. 50 % lower risk – I think that’s huge don’t you?

The study’s conclusion – Mind and body are intrinsically linked and attitude has an impact on the final outcome – death!! So adopting a positive attitude literally is “a matter of life and death!!”

More evidence if you are not convinced yet

This was further compounded by a Yale University study that asked 660 elderly people whether they agreed that we become less useful as we age. Those who didn’t agree, and therefore had the most positive attitude about aging lived an average of 7.5 years longer than those with the most negative attitudes towards aging, who believed that we become less useful as we age!

A Positive Attitude helps you live longer

It was also shown in a Dutch study at the University of Leiden in the Hague that examined the attitudes and longevity of 999 people over the age of 65. The study reported a “protective relationship” between optimism and mortality. People with a positive attitude, quite simply, lived longer. They even had a 77% lower risk of heart disease than pessimists!

Benefits of positive thinking

The benefits of learning to control your mind are endless and apart from living a happy and fulfilled life, having a positive mindset even increases your life –if that isn’t a good enough reason to take charge of your thoughts I don’t know what it!
