Why I meditate (and maybe you should too)

I heard someone say yesterday that we want to emit ‘the true fragrance of what we are’

What a lovely way of saying let your true self shine through, let the world benefit from you gifts!

Don’t we all want to do that at our core, I mean really, don’t we all just want to be ourselves, be totally our totally authentic self?

I know that I do and I to strive to be that, to be my authentic self and not the self I think other people want/expect me to be and that has been a hard but very necessary lesson I had to learn!

One thing I do know for sure is that to achieve this we have to purify the mind, and let go of the fear of being judged.

The way I have learned how to do that is through meditation!


We have to ‘cleanse’ the mind every day just as we do with our body.  The mind needs daily maintenance.

How do I do that I can hear you saying?  Well if you have time to check your face book then you have time to devote to cleansing your mind, and the rewards from that will be a thousand times more beneficial, that I can promise you.

For over two thousand years our minds have been trained to look externally for answers to our problems.

Our neural pathways have been well trained to do this and so to start to look within for answers is a new concept to most people, but look within you must if you want to live a happy, healthy and fulfilled life, a life of meaning and I believe deep down, in your core, everyone wants that!

The yogi’s have always know this and neuroscience is just beginning to divulge information that the yogi’s have known for thousands of years.

If you want to improve your life, begin a mediation practice, it will without doubt achieve that for you.  It’s not an overnight fix, it takes effort and perseverance but I can’t recommend it highly enough

We turn to all sorts of things to try to get to that place of peace, so many people engage in taking drugs, alcohol, smoking, whatever it is you do may work in the short term, a few glasses of wine, shopping, gambling, are all things to help us with the unrest and unease that we feel inside.

Why are we so stressed in the western world?  One reason is that we have never before had so much information coming at us!

Eric Schmidt – Executive Chairman of Google said quote “Is it any wonder the whole world is stressed out!  You need nerves of steel to live in the western world at this time”.

Every two days now we create as much information as we did from the dawn of civilisation up until 2003 according to Schmidt.  That is something like five Exabyte’s of data he says!!

What – I can hear you saying so…..let me repeat that; we create as much information in two days now as we did from the dawn of man through to 2003!!!  That includes pictures, instant messages and tweets, they all add to this.  That is unbelievable isn’t it!

There is a part of our brain – our RAS (Reticular Activating System) that filters so much of the information out of our awareness otherwise we would go insane.  One of my favourite mentors said in a course on nlp I took some years ago said that we have 2 billion bits of information coming at us every second.  That’s why our RAS filters it out.

So what’s the answer, what can we do to help ourselves feel better, less stressed and calmer

Well in my humble opinion meditation is one of the best things you can do for your health and wellbeing is to maintain a peaceful state.

Most of what you see in the media, news papers, TV and even on your FB news feed (in some cases) can be very negative and fear based.

These constant negative messages cause stress and worry and lower your vibrational energy.

But don’t push away your stresses and worries, look at them, then decide if that thought it helping you or not, is it making you feel good?  If not just decide to let it go!

A regular mediation practice creates a strong magnetic field around you, (we all have an energy field that surrounds our bodies) just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

You can’t see electricity but you know it’s working.

Where you attention goes your life force flows!  It’s an immutable law of nature.

So decide not to put your attention on the horror stories on the news, read something uplifting instead.

Joseph Campbell tells us to “follow our bliss” but do you know what that is for you?  If you don’t I highly encourage you to set your intention to find out, once you do, your life will never be the same again!  That I know for sure from my own experience.

The mind is everything, look after your mind and it will look after you!
